The Sketchbook Project

Sketchbook2012The Art House Co-op has the coolest ideas for inspiring artists to try new things and break down any boundaries of skill or location.  I also entered their ‘Sketchbook Project’ earlier this year – and the exhibit was recently featured in the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/13/nyregion/at-the-brooklyn-art-library-a-home-for-personal-sketchbooks.html

In a nutshell – you ‘buy’ a small sketchbook and fill it up with whatever.  Send it back to the gallery and all the sketchbooks go on tour together.  There is also a digital version of most of the sketchbooks.  Take a look randomly at some of the cool creations in the digital library (http://www.arthousecoop.com/library), or search for me (September) and check out my little doodlely number :)

A surprise

Yesterday I received an email from Wendy in London, UK saying ‘I received your beautiful horse’.  I was stumped – did she buy a print from my Fine Art America or Zazzle  store?  I checked – no recent sales…  So I asked – ‘where did you buy it’?  And then the mystery started to unfold.

A couple of months ago I participated in the Brooklyn Art House Co-op 4X6 exchange ( http://www.arthousecoop.com/projects/4x6exchange) .  I drew a pretty little picture of a horse (because that is what I love ) and sent it off with a self addressed envelope.  My little piece arrived in London.

Later in the day yesterday, I received my return gift.  An inspirational pen drawing with incredible detail from Samarra Khaja (http://samarrakhaja.tumblr.com) .

All I can say is what a very cool project!  I wish I had taken a picture of my own submission to post here as well, but I didn’t :)

Buying Art – lots of it!

Tomorrow I will be going to the Kamloops Art Council Juried Art Show (www.kamloopsarts.com/events/annual-events/juried-art-show)  to purchase 10 pieces of art for the Kamloops Timeraiser (www.socialfire.ca/timeraiser).  Dean and Carly from NRI Distribution and the incredible artist Dave Langevin (www.davidlangevin.com) will be joining me to select pieces for purchase.

I am so excited to buy all this amazing art – even if I don’t get to keep it.

I have a couple of pieces in the show as well – I wonder if my committee members will end up picking one of them… and will that be appropriate?  I am not too worried, they are approximately 180 pieces of amazing art from local, emerging artists on display at the show.

Want to learn more about the Timeraiser?  Check it out the link above or the Timeraiser website www.timeraiser.ca, or at least check the Art Show before it ends on Feb 26th.

Muse Affair Interview with Janet Whitehead

Read the whole  interview here: The Muse A-Faerian Interviews: September Kuromi’s Dual Life.

Real people, magical people, inspired people, people I have the blessing of getting to know through my work, people just like you.   In this series, they will be sharing their trials, tribulations, creative passions and reminding you of your wisdom, wonder, and even ‘normalness’.. for a creative soul, that is.

A bit about you?

I am an ex-corporate computer programmer – I love social media, business intelligence and solving impossible programming challenges.  But now – I divide my time between three young kids, creating art and consulting on corporate volunteering/sustainable business practices.

My first love in art is horses – my second love is portraits.  I do commissions and fun pieces in pencil, plus dabbling in painting, sculpting.  I will have a little of everything at the Muse-Affair.

Unicorn in clay

We did some clay in a recent creative workshop.  This is the first time I have worked clay since I was a teenager (lots of playdough in the meantime though) – so this was a treat, and evidently I am still pretty good at it :)   In my head I was thinking of the movie The Last Unicorn while I was doing this.  I can hardly wait to glaze it.

Isabella

This is a pencil drawing of a young Isabella Rosselini.  I don’t ‘love’ doing portraits because it is so hard to get them perfect, but sometimes I amaze myself – and this is an example.  I love the way the fabric turned out.  This is for sale at the Art We Are cafe in Kamloops and prints can purchased from Zazzle: http://www.zazzle.ca/isabella_rosselini_poster-228160687935599419.
