I haven’t posted in a while, but I haven’t been completely idle. I was recently commissioned to draw a lovely yellow lab that belongs to my grandparents. I tried to experiment with some new medium this time around.
The first piece started out as a pastel drawing of Maude in “Q” garden – but I wasn’t happy with it. So I then painted overtop of the pastel with acrylics. It gave the piece more colour and depth – but I still wasn’t delighted, so I did a second piece (a bonus)

For the second piece I bought some black artist paper. I find drawing a white dog on white paper challenging. Well, drawing on black paper is even more challenging. I am used to drawing my lines, especially the beginning ones, where the shadows are – on this paper, I needed to draw the highlights. Totally backwards and it took a few tries before I got the basic shapes right. I also found it challenging to get enough colour on the page – the end result is pretty, but Maude looks a little translucent. I will try some more different mediums on the black paper – because the result is striking.

And after all this, I am happy with the results – I feel like my clients got their money’s worth – but I will stick my strengths (pencil drawings) for a little while longer.
Oh my gosh. It looks just like Maude, with her sweet expression.
Thanks Joy. It took a few tries – but I am glad you can ‘see’ her
I love Maude on the black background – It looks fabulous! I miss Bennett – she looks just like him!
Aw – thanks
Maybe you should get me to draw him
