Equine Art and Animal Portraits

I have decided I abhor backgrounds. I have some drawings where I filled in all the background with detail – trees and mountains. And I remember disliking the process and I am still not pleased with the result. I like it much better when the subject is clear and other stuff is merely suggested.
For the first time today I saw a print by Jan Kunster who is famous for putting all the detail into the horse and the rider is barely outlined. Like this:
I am drawn to this style of painting. So don’t expect to see any fancy backgrounds from me any time soon…
